Palm Kernel Fatty Acid Distillate (PKFAD)

Malaysia is the world’s second largest producer of crude palm oil. Majority of the produced oil is processed locally. The preferred and most widely used method of processing palm oil in Malaysia is by physical refining to produce refined, bleached and deodorised palm oil products. As part of the refining process, unacceptable odours and flavours found in the fatty acids residue, aldehydes and ketones are deodorised by low vacuum steam distillation. The resulting fatty acid vapours emitted out of the deodorisers is condensed and cooled to be stored in tanks as fatty acids distillate.  Palm Kernal Fatty Acid Distillate (PKFAD) is a by-product from refining crude palm oil. At room temperature, PKFAD is a light brown and semi-solid-state product of this refining process. Upon heating it melts down to a brown liquid. Palm kernel fatty acid distillate comprise mainly of free fatty acids with palmitic acid and olefin acid being the major components. The uses of PKFADs: PKFADs are increasingly used in the soup industries; as raw materials for the oleochemicals industry such as the manufacture of candles, toiletries and assorted cosmetics. PKFADs are also used by the animal feed industry. PKFADs have many other broad applications as well. It is used widely as food emulsifiers, as additives in rubber processing, The flavours and fragrance industries and pharmaceutical industries also use PKFADs intensively for their assorted formulations.
